Due Diligence

Why the due diligence process required?

Due diligence is the process by which both parties, the school and the trust, seek to understand the risks and benefits of proceeding with the conversion. It is usually completed once the decision has been made to proceed in principle.

What does due diligence involve?

The school should check whether the trust is going to fulfil their requirements in terms of values, support and approach. School leaders and governors should look at the website information and policies, talk to schools that are in the trust, and check the performance data on the government website.

When BWMAT is undertaking due diligence, we ask you to provide information:

  • Education
  • Finance
  • HR
  • Estates
  • IT
  • Governance

We evaluate the information provided, then meet with school leaders and staff to find out more information.

What happens after the process is completed?

Once school leaders have completed their due diligence activities, they should ensure that they have all the information they need to confirm that they want to join the multi-academy trust.

The Trust collates findings from the due diligence process into a report for Trustees, so that they can make the decision to accept the school.

Although rare, it is possible that findings from the due diligence processes will result in one or both parties withdrawing from the process.
