Beckington Church First School: A caring, inclusive school at the heart of its community, says Ofsted
Beckington Church First School is a “calm and safe environment for all” where pupils are known, valued and supported to succeed, according to its latest inspection, under the new Ofsted framework.
Inspectors recognised that the village school near Frome sits at the very heart of its community, with strong relationships between staff, pupils and families, creating a nurturing environment where children feel safe, happy and ready to learn. Pupils were described as enthusiastic learners who demonstrate positive attitudes and take pride in their roles and contributions to school life.
The school reached the expected standard in all seven areas of inspection: achievement; attendance and behaviour; curriculum and teaching; early years; inclusion; leadership and governance; and pupils’ personal development and wellbeing. Beckington also has an open and positive culture of safeguarding with all legal requirements met.
The report highlights that pupils typically achieve well, with outcomes reflecting a secure foundation in reading, writing and mathematics. Leaders have prioritised reading from the earliest stages, ensuring that children develop strong early literacy skills and are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
Attendance and behaviour are also strong, with leaders maintaining high expectations and working closely with families to ensure pupils attend regularly and engage fully in school life. As a result, attendance is above national averages and pupils benefit from a calm, orderly environment where learning is rarely disrupted.

- A rich personal development offer, including leadership roles, wider experiences and opportunities to build confidence and resilience
The inspection also recognised the positive impact of leadership, noting that leaders have brought stability, clear direction and ambition following a period of change. Supported by the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust, leaders have an accurate understanding of the school’s strengths and priorities, and are continuing to strengthen teaching and deepen pupils’ learning across the curriculum.
The report highlights that pupils benefit from a wide range of experiences beyond the classroom, helping to build confidence, develop teamwork and broaden horizons. Pupils spoke enthusiastically about opportunities such as sporting events and residential trips, which support both personal growth and preparation for the next stage of education.
