Christ Church, a school where pupils flourish both academically and personally - Ofsted
Christ Church First School in Frome has been praised by Ofsted for its calm, inclusive culture and strong support for pupils and families following its recent inspection under Ofsted’s new inspection framework.
The inspection highlights a school where pupils flourish both academically and personally, with inclusion described as a defining feature of daily life. The inspectors said Christ Church had achieved the ‘expected standard’ with praise for many aspects of school life.
The report also marks a significant milestone in the school’s transformation journey. In February 2022, prior to joining the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust, Christ Church First School was judged inadequate in all areas, with inspectors at the time describing “a school in turmoil” where “too many pupils were unhappy and not safe.” Since then, leaders, staff, governors and the Trust have worked with unwavering commitment to rebuild every aspect of school life—from safeguarding and behaviour to curriculum, culture and community relationships.
The latest inspection acknowledges the scale and success of this work, reflecting a school that has not only addressed previous concerns but has reshaped itself into a calm, nurturing and inclusive environment where pupils feel safe, supported and able to thrive.
Inspectors, who said the school had achieved the ‘expected standard’ under the new framework, noted: “Pupils prosper in this calm and inclusive school. Staff know pupils and their families well. They build positive relationships based on trust. Staff identify any barriers pupils face and use their expertise to provide the right support. This ensures that pupils across the school, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities and those who are disadvantaged, are able to succeed.”
The report also recognised the school’s deep commitment to understanding and supporting every child as an individual, stating: “Inclusion is a golden thread that runs throughout this school. Leaders know each pupil as a unique individual. They have a detailed understanding of the support pupils need to fulfil their potential. This helps pupils to develop confidence and self-belief.”
Inspectors highlighted the impact of consistent behaviour expectations and strong pastoral care, saying: “…pupils have positive attitudes to learning and the school is calm and orderly. Staff benefit from significant training and development for managing pupils' behaviour. The consistent approach to behaviour and wide range of pastoral support has made a considerable improvement to the behaviour and attitudes of many pupils.”
Staff were praised for knowing pupils exceptionally well and for working closely with families to remove barriers to learning. This relational approach ensures that children feel understood and supported, enabling them to develop confidence, resilience and a genuine love of learning. Inspectors noted that pupils respond positively to the school’s high expectations, demonstrating positive attitudes to learning and pride in their school.
Inclusion was identified as a defining strength, woven through every aspect of school life. Leaders were commended for their deep understanding of each pupil as a unique individual, particularly those with special educational needs and/or disabilities and those who are disadvantaged. The report highlights how early identification, skilled staff training and tailored support enable pupils to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
The school’s strong pastoral systems were also recognised as having a significant impact. A consistent approach to behaviour, supported by extensive staff training and a wide range of pastoral support, has led to clear improvements in behaviour and attitudes to learning. Social times, including lunchtimes, were described as calm and harmonious, further reinforcing the strong sense of belonging felt across the school community.
Inspectors also praised the school’s focus on personal development and wellbeing. Pupils benefit from a thoughtfully designed programme that promotes moral understanding, emotional literacy and respect for others. From the early years onwards, children are supported to understand their feelings, manage emotions and build positive relationships. A wide range of enrichment opportunities, including clubs and performances, helps pupils broaden their horizons and develop confidence beyond the classroom.
Leadership at all levels was recognised as aspirational and purposeful. Since joining Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust, leaders have driven rapid improvement through a clear understanding of the school’s strengths and areas for development. Staff morale was reported to be high, with inspectors noting the value placed on professional development, wellbeing and workload, supported by both school and trust leaders.
Joe Beament, Executive Headteacher of Christ Church First School, said: “We are incredibly proud of this report, which truly reflects the values and culture of Christ Church. Our staff work tirelessly to build trusting relationships with pupils and families, ensuring that every child feels safe, supported and able to succeed. Inclusion is central to everything we do, and it is wonderful to see this recognised so clearly.”
Nikki Edwards, Chief Executive Officer of Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust (BWMAT), added: “This is a highly positive report and a testament to the strength of leadership, teamwork and commitment at Christ Church First School. Inspectors have recognised the school’s calm, inclusive environment and the excellent support provided for pupils with additional needs and those facing disadvantage. We are extremely proud of the staff and pupils, and of the way the school lives out our shared values of care, equity and ambition for every child.”
The report recognises the significant progress made since the school joined BWMAT and highlights strong staff morale, effective governance and a clear sense of pride across the school community. Christ Church First School continues to focus on building confidence, resilience and aspiration, ensuring pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
