Mells Church of England First School celebrates glowing SIAMS report highlighting inclusive, caring and aspirational education

Inspection praises the school’s Christian vision, strong leadership, and nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

Mells Church of England First School is celebrating a highly positive outcome following its recent Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS). The report says that the school is “living up to its foundation as a Church school” and enabling both pupils and adults to flourish.

The inspection praises the school for creating a safe, caring, and aspirational learning community, rooted in its Christian vision inspired by the Parable of the Lost Sheep. This vision ensures that every child is known, valued, and supported to become the best version of themselves.

The report highlights the school’s inclusive ethos, strong partnerships with the Bath & Wells Multi Academy Trust (BWMAT), and commitment to high-quality education. It also recognises the school’s focus on spiritual development, providing pupils with opportunities to reflect, explore big questions, and experience awe and wonder in their rural setting.

This success comes after a period of renewal, during which leaders have made ‘clear-sighted’ decisions to strengthen the school’s culture and curriculum. Parents describe the school as having a “home from home” feel, where relationships are nurturing and every voice is heard.

The report also highlighted:

  • Christian vision in action: Leaders and governors ensure the school’s ethos of togetherness and service is lived out daily.
  • Inclusive and nurturing environment: All pupils, including those with SEND, feel loved and included.
  • Curriculum positives: Opportunities for awe, wonder, and reflection are embedded in the curriculum.
  • High-quality RE: Religious Education is engaging, relevant, and valued by pupils and staff.
  • Strong Partnerships: Alignment with BWMAT’s vision provides robust support and empowerment.
  • Responsibility: A collective responsibility to ensure that pupils look out for one another permeates the school.

Sally Jefferies, Executive Headteacher, said: “We are thrilled that the report reflects the heart of our school—where every child is known, loved, and encouraged to be the best they can be. This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our staff, governors, and the support of our families and community.”

Nikki Edwards, BWMAT CEO, added: “This report is a wonderful affirmation of the school’s commitment to excellence and inclusion. Mells exemplifies how a strong Christian vision, combined with high aspirations, can transform lives and create a flourishing school community.”

The report also notes areas for development, including expanding opportunities for pupils to respond to global injustice and embedding a shared understanding of spirituality. These will form part of the school’s ongoing improvement journey.
