Norton Fitzwarren's commitment to diversity highlighted in glowing SIAMS report

Norton Fitzwarren Church School is celebrating a highly positive outcome following its recent Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS), which praised the school for its inclusive Christian vision, strong leadership, and commitment to enabling pupils and adults to flourish.
Inspectors highlighted that the school is “living up to its foundation as a Church school” and recognised several notable strengths that shape the school’s culture and daily life. Central to the report was the impact of the school’s Christian vision, “One family together we shine,” inspired by the parable of the lost sheep. The vision was commended for guiding decision making, nurturing relationships, and ensuring that no member of the community is ‘lost.’
Key strengths celebrated in the report include:
- A deeply embedded Christian vision that influences every aspect of school life and ensures wellbeing and inclusion remain at the heart of decision making.
- A carefully designed and inclusive curriculum, shaped by the vision of belonging, which supports pupils from a variety of backgrounds and enables every child to shine.
- Strong and effective leadership in Religious Education, resulting in a well sequenced curriculum and high quality teaching supported through training and diocesan partnerships. sequenced curriculum and high quality teaching supported through training and diocesan partnerships. sequenced curriculum and high quality teaching supported through training and diocesan partnerships.
- Rich opportunities for collective worship, described as spiritually nourishing and thoughtfully planned, with strong links to the local church and wider Christian community.
- A powerful culture of wellbeing, where leaders prioritise mental health, provide specialist support, and ensure pupils feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.
Headteacher Kelly Birt expressed her pride in the report, saying:
“We are delighted that the inspection has recognised the strength of our vision and the way it is lived out across our school. This report is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of our children, and the support of our families, church, and trust. We truly believe in shining together as one family, and it is wonderful to see this reflected in such positive findings.”
The report also praised the school’s commitment to diversity, wellbeing initiatives such as wellbeing champions and themed weeks, and its compassionate response during difficult times, including joint community events with the church.
Chair of Governors Rosemary Maskell welcomed the findings, saying the school’s success “reflects the strong partnership between staff, pupils, families, governors, and the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust.”
The inspection recommended just one development point: to expand opportunities for pupils to act on issues of injustice and make ethical choices that positively impact the world around them. Inspectors noted that pupils already demonstrate compassion and awareness and that enhancing these opportunities will further strengthen their agency.
With 286 pupils on roll and a thriving partnership with the Bath and Wells Diocese and local churches, Norton Fitzwarren Church School continues to build on its strong foundations. The SIAMS report affirms the school’s commitment to its vision and its success in nurturing a community where every individual is encouraged and supported to flourish.
