Ofsted recognises strong start for children and thriving community at Batheaston Church School

Batheaston Church School is celebrating a positive Ofsted report that recognises significant strengths in its provision, with inspectors judging both Early Years and Personal Development and Wellbeing as meeting the Strong Standard, while all other areas successfully met the Expected Standard.

The inspection highlighted the school's welcoming community, high-quality support for pupils and strong culture of care, alongside the positive impact of leaders' work to help every child thrive. Safeguarding standards were also confirmed as being met.

A particular highlight of the report was the recognition of Early Years and Personal Development and Wellbeing as areas of strength within the school. Under the new reporting framework, a Strong Standard means leaders are consistently working above the standard expected of them.

Inspectors praised the school's nurturing approach to its youngest learners, stating:

"Leaders make sure that children in the early years have a highly positive start to school."

The report also identified personal development as a key strength, concluding that:

"The personal development provision is a strength of the school."

Key findings from the inspection

  • Early Years: Children receive a "highly positive start to school", quickly grow in confidence and are "very well prepared for Year 1". Inspectors praised the strong focus on speech, language and early reading.
  • Personal Development and Wellbeing: Pupils benefit from a rich programme of opportunities that help them become active citizens, develop leadership skills and show respect for others. Inspectors found pupils have a deep respect for difference and demonstrate care for others.
  • Achievement: Pupils achieve as well as their peers nationally, with inspectors highlighting reading as "a notable strength" of the school.
  • Attendance and Behaviour: Pupils behave well, understand what is expected of them and show positive attitudes to learning. Ofsted noted that bullying is rare and never tolerated.
  • Curriculum and Teaching: Inspectors recognised the school's broad and interesting curriculum and the work undertaken to strengthen reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Inclusion: Leaders were praised for effectively identifying pupils' barriers to learning and wellbeing and ensuring children receive the right support at the right time.
  • Leadership and Governance: Inspectors found that school and trust leaders, alongside governors and trustees, have pupils' best interests at the heart of decision-making and have an accurate understanding of the school's strengths and priorities.

The report also recognised the strong sense of community that exists throughout the school. Inspectors noted that older pupils take on roles as "Special Friends" to welcome younger children and their families, helping them settle quickly into school life.

They also praised the warm, respectful relationships between staff and pupils, and the many opportunities available for children to develop their talents and interests.

Sally Jefferies, Executive Headteacher at Batheaston Church School, said:

"We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the many strengths that make Batheaston Church School such a special place to learn. The Strong Standard judgements for both Early Years and Personal Development and Wellbeing reflect the passion, commitment and care shown by our staff every day."

"We were particularly pleased that inspectors recognised the positive start children receive when they join our school, the strong relationships across our community and the extensive opportunities pupils have to develop confidence, character and leadership skills. We are proud of what our children achieve and remain committed to continually improving so that every pupil can flourish."

Nikki Edwards, Chief Executive Officer of Bath & Wells Multi Academy Trust, said:

"This is a very positive report which reflects the strong culture, ambition and care that exists across Batheaston Church School. The recognition of Strong Standards in both Early Years and Personal Development and Wellbeing is especially pleasing and highlights the impact of the school's work in supporting the whole child."

"I would like to thank Sally, the staff team, trust local committee members, pupils and families for their dedication and support. We are pleased that all remaining areas were judged to be meeting the Expected Standard and look forward to continuing to support the school as it builds on these successes."

Inspectors also found that parents are highly positive about the school, with many praising how happy their children are and the dedication of staff. The report notes that leaders encourage families to play an active role in school life and that pupils are proud of their school and enjoy the wide range of opportunities available to them.
