Pupils embrace school’s vision of hope and aspiration - inspector
St Mary and St Peter’s Church School in Ilton has received a glowing report from Church inspectors.
The SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) report praised the school, saying: "Pupils and parents are proud of their school. They share in the ownership of the school’s vision and values and appreciate the support they get from adults in the school”.
Inspector Rhian Cockwell delivered an overall 'Good' rating, noting how the school’s vision "with its emphasis on hope and aspiration, has made a significant impact on pupils".
The school, under the leadership of Executive Headteacher Connel Boyle, was commended for the way all children and adults flourish and commented that “St Mary and St Peter’s is a warm and caring community where pupils and parents are welcomed and supported by every member of the staff team”.
Ms Cockwell said the school, which is in a partnership with Shepton Beauchamp Church School, was particularly strong in partnership work with the local church, the community, the Bath and Wells Diocese and the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust.
She said: “The strong support from the community, Diocese as well as relationships with other local schools, have all been well used in the school’s drive to live out fully its vision and shape school policy and plans”.
Ms Cockwell added: “Pupils flourish at this caring school whose inclusive approach addresses the needs of all. A true sense of belonging and looking after one another reverberates through all the school does”
She also noted:
- Leaders at St Mary and St Peter’s have revised and embedded the school vision, ensuring it is the driving force behind the decision making at all levels.
- Pupils’ behaviour is good because there are high expectations from staff. Attendance is good because pupils feel safe and enjoy coming to school.
- The moral and social development of pupils in line with the vision is a high priority. Pupils understand and value the role and responsibilities they have when supporting others within the local community.
- Great care is taken to support pupils with additional needs. In this small school, the provision for learning and emotional and social needs is a strength, and staff are unwavering in their compassion and drive.
Mr Boyle, Executive Headteacher, said: “We are all absolutely thrilled by this report which is a testament to the hard work of our staff, the support of our parents, community, church, diocese and trust family, and our brilliant children.
“But we will not be standing still and we see this as an opportunity to climb even higher as we aspire to give every child the very best start in their school education.”
Chair of Governors Terry Gibson said “Our Governors are so grateful for the strong and aspirational leadership of our Headteacher and how all of our staff share our ambitions for our school to strive for excellence in all areas”
