Remembrance 2024

How some of our schools reflected on the fallen in conflict

Abbas and Templecombe/St Nicholas, Henstridge

Both Abbas and Templecombe and St. Nicholas, Henstridge joined with their villages to pay respects to those who gave their lives in past and present conflicts.

It has been the theme of our Collective Worships linking into our Mr Men faith focus, with Mr Strong (the disciple Peter) eventually standing up for what was right and pupils reflecting on when they too have defended others.

In class, children created poems and art works which they shared in a special assembly on the afternoon of the 11th. Pupils who belong to uniformed organisations joined with the community on Sunday 10th at their Church's service and we held Acts of Remembrance on Monday 11th in front of the school at St. Nicholas and at the Church War Memorial for Abbas and Templecombe.

The children were super respectful of the time, truly living up to the well known phrase 'We will remember them'.

St Stephen's

The topic Year 2 from St Stephen's, Bath, are exploring this term is called ‘Remembering’.

We have been thinking about what happened during World War 1 and we have learned that poppies are a symbol of Remembrance. We made our own poppies to create a poppy wreath.

On Monday 11th November, we visited St Stephen’s Church and held a 2-minute silence to remember those that have fought and died in war.

Reverend Philip shared a prayer with us, and we lay our poppy wreaths at the altar.

Norton Fitzwarren

Norton Fitzwarren Church School, Taunton, supported the Royal British Legion during the week prior to Remembrance Day.

The Year 6 charity team sold poppies and poppy merchandise in classes throughout the week. On the Thursday before Remembrance Day, the year 6 team were invited to attend a service in the graveyard at All Saints Church in Norton.

The service was attended by members of the Royal British legion, whom were ex service personnel. Last year, the school gained Royal British Legion affiliation thanks to Mrs Hill, the schools parental engagement officer, and this remains a strong link.

During the service, the children were invited to lay flowers and crosses on the graves of 5 soldiers who died during WW2. The Royal British Legion also had a tour of the school and visited all classes.

The children were asking them questions, admiring their medals and showing them their poppy displays.

During Remembrance Day, a 2-minute silence was held on the playground, all staff and children were present for this – even pre-school who were fantastic! All of the children showed exemplary behaviour.

Churchfield

Churchfield Church School, Highbridge, had a service of remembrance altogether before Year 6 walked to the war memorial to lay our school wreath at the Highbridge First World War Memorial.

Many of the children came to school in their Guide, Scout and Brownie Uniforms and Mrs Aylward in her Cadet Leaders uniform.

We were fortunate to have two members of our teaching staff with us who have served in the Armed Forces, Mr Kitchen who served in the Navy and Mrs Aylward who served in the Army.

St John and St Francis, Bridgwater

Court de Wyck

Court de Wyck, Claverham, gathered for a special Remembrance Collective Worship.

The Spiritual Group helped lead the Worship and told us why we have Remembrance Day, they read a poem and led the prayers.

The school community took part in a two minutes' silence together.

St Michael's

For Remembrance on Monday, St Michael's, Bath, took a group of children chosen by their teachers for being safe, ready and respectful to visit the local Twerton war memorial, and then the bus into Bath city centre to the memorial cross at Bath Abbey.

In both locations, they laid a poppy wreath from St. Michael's with a special message from the school.

Kingshill

Kingshill Church School marked Remembrance Day through a service in school, collaborative learning in community groups to create artwork and inward facing reflection circles in the school playground for the 2 minute-silence.

Our school service was attended by members of the local community and a service veteran, who spoke with classes after the service and shared their medals.

The children had worked in community groups prior to the service to create their artwork and the community group leaders presented their art in the service.

Cheddon Fitzpaine

Cheddon Fitzpaine were invited to attend the Remembrance service at Maidenbook Park on Friday the 8th November at 2pm.

The children were asked to lay crosses down to remember the fallen.

Staplegrove

Staplegrove Church School in Taunton marked Remembrance with a visit from 2 members of the Royal British Legion, who joined us for a whole-school worship and reflected on their experiences of serving in the Armed Forces.

Our Year 5 children visited Commonwealth War Graves at St John's Church and took part in a service of remembrance.

Meanwhile, Year 6 children laid a wreath at 11am on 11th November at the War Memorial in Vivary Park, Taunton.

St Mark's

The St Mark's, Weston-super-Mare, community came together on Monday 11th for a special Remembrance day worship.

Parents and members of the community joined us in giving thanks and remembering those who gave their lives so we are able to enjoy the freedoms we have today.

The children laid wreaths outside our Peace Garden and honored those brave individuals with a 2 minutes' silence which ended with the Last Post.

Christ Church

Christ Church First School laid a wreath at the Memorial Theatre in Frome, connecting us to the wider community in this solemn act of remembrance.

Our children have shown remarkable empathy and creativity in their tributes. During our special assembly, we explored the significance of remembering our fallen heroes. Every child contributed to our poignant hall display, crafting beautifully decorated poppies. The sight of our children delivering their handmade poppies during the two-minute silence was truly moving, a testament to their understanding and respect.

Our Little Diamonds weren't left out of this important occasion. They engaged in age-appropriate learning about remembrance and put their artistic skills to work decorating poppy biscuits.
