Small school, big impact: Lydeard St Lawrence PTFA takes top national honour

Lydeard St Lawrence Primary School is celebrating a remarkable achievement after its Parent, Teacher and Friends Association (PTFA) was named National PTFA of the Year by Parentkind.
This prestigious award recognises the PTFA’s outstanding and transformational contribution to school life. In recent years, the small rural school has faced significant challenges, from the impact of COVID-19 to the pressures of isolation. Through it all, the PTFA has been described as “the heartbeat of the school’s recovery,” rebuilding not just spaces but hope, confidence, and joy.
The PTFA’s initiatives have been imaginative and deeply meaningful. Highlights include:
- The Magical Tractor Run – an annual celebration of the farming community that raises vital funds and fosters pride and belonging.
- The Growing Garden Project – a living classroom where children learn sustainability, responsibility, and wellbeing.
- Literacy Boost – providing a book for every child to promote reading and the joy of owning a story.
- Year 6 Ambassador Programme – empowering pupils with leadership opportunities and responsibility.
Beyond the school gates, the PTFA has worked to unite communities, hosting joint sports days with other Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust schools and supporting anti-bullying workshops. Their commitment to equity ensures every child can access trips and activities, quietly supporting families with dignity and care.
Headteacher Rebecca Lihou praised the team’s dedication: “They fiercely support for our school because they believe in it—and because they know, like we do, that this is a very special place. With determination, love, and vision, they have helped transform lives.”
Led by chair Jo Marks and a team of over 10 passionate members, Lydeard St Lawrence PTFA has proven that a small group with a big heart can make all the difference.
Parentkind, a charity that supports parent associations across the UK, highlighted the group for embodying the true "PTA spirit" through various initiatives, including "magical tractor runs" and ensuring all children could participate in school trips.
The awards recognise the extraordinary dedication and imagination of parent groups across the country, celebrating their vital support, creativity, and resilience within school communities.
