Small Schools
Why do we have a section for small schools?
At BWMAT, approximately half our schools meet the ‘small school’ criteria of fewer than 200 pupils. We know that there are a number of specific challenges faced by small schools which are not experienced in larger schools.
We do not believe that leadership of a small school is easier (or harder) than leadership of a larger school; it is just a different role. We also know that the financial limitations of schools’ budgets are more challenging for small schools, with very little flexibility when the unexpected occurs.
In recognition of this, we are in the process of creating a small school strategy which will set out requirements and frameworks for small school planning and organization.
The strategy will be supplemented by a Small School Policy which respects schools’ autonomy, whilst recognizing the benefits and limitations of a small team.
We will be consulting schools on the strategy and policy. The intention is that, where possible and relevant, schools will work together to share roles in areas such as subject leadership, inclusion, office, site etc. However, where a school is working well and demonstrating sustainability, school leaders continue to be the decision-makers.
What does this mean for small schools joining the trust?
As part of the due diligence process, we will work with you to identify any risks or challenges you are experiencing and the specific strengths you can offer to other schools. We will then identify which cluster the school will join. Once you join the trust, you are required to work collaboratively as part of a cluster.
