Message from CEO 9 July 2017

Dear All,

Firstly this week, I would like to share our Trust’s provisional 2016-17 pupil outcomes.  There have been so many results – for individual pupils, groups, classes, year groups, schools and hubs – where outcomes evidence impressive improvements on 2016.   It is wonderful to see schools where so many pupils, including the more vulnerable, have made fantastic progress and achieved outcomes that will change how children see themselves and their confidence in their abilities as learners.

Key Stage 2 SATs

We are 3 points above the national in Reading (74), 3 points above the national in Writing (79) and just below the national in Mathematics (72).  We are 2 points above the national in Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (79).  Our RWM combined is in line with the national of 61.

Key Stage 1

We do not yet have national outcomes for KS1 in 2017.  Our Reading outcomes have improved 6 points on 2016 to 80, Writing has improved 1 point to 75 and Mathematics has improved 7 points to 80.

Phonics screening

82% of our Y1 pupils achieved the expected standard, up 1 point on 2016.


74% of BWMAT pupils achieved a Good Level of Development, an improvement of 5 points on 2016.

Our results overall – on a four year trajectory of improvement in almost all areas – are a testament to our Head teachers and leaders’ skills, the fantastic work of teachers and school staff, the quality of support from members of our Support Team, your collaborative ways of working including high quality training and development meetings and your focus on improving outcomes for all of our pupils: my heartfelt thanks to you all.

There are some schools where leaders have raised expectations of what can be achieved but where outcomes do not yet fully evidence the progress being made.   I know these staff and leaders have the resilience, determination and skill to continue to drive towards improving pupil outcomes further and faster next year.

Congratulations to all at Norton Fitzwarren for the school’s ‘Good’ Ofsted judgement that was confirmed this week.   This fantastic result is further reinforced by the school’s impressive KS2 SATs outcomes.   Together, leaders, teachers, staff, governors and the community have put the school on a path where its next step is to aim for a self-evaluation of ‘Outstanding’.  They, along with all of our Trust’s ‘Good’ schools, will reach to achieve this in 2017-18.

On Tuesday morning Kingshill held their annual Boules competition, welcoming Grove School, Court de Wyck, St John the Evangelist and Churchfield Church Schools. Jan reflected, ‘It was lovely to see the children mix so well and play with real sportsmanship, exhibiting our sports values. We all enjoyed a little chocolate brioche too!’  A member of staff from St John’s commented that the children were all super and a great time was had by all.

Next week Teresa will be sharing the BWMAT’s results – outcomes in each hub and school – with Directors.  I will be presenting Directors with a review of the progress of each of our Trust’s key priorities: improving outcomes, teaching and learning, resources and leadership.

We have increased ambition for 2017-18.  We know pupil outcomes in Mathematics in particular at Key Stage 2 need to improve overall. We aim to continue our upward trajectory – to be well above the national for Reading, Writing and Mathematics combined at Key Stage 2. Together we will build on, share and celebrate the strengths of each school and hub in 2017-18.  We will work collaboratively to address aspects of teaching, learning and leadership where they are not yet good.  Our shared Christian values and vision will guide us as we continue on our ongoing journey of improvement, as we reach to provide that most important thing – an outstanding education of mind, body and spirit for every child within our Trust.
